Retrieval is not memory: a systems distinction

Bolting a vector database onto a model is not the same as giving it memory. We break down the difference and where each one actually belongs in the stack.

Retrieval is not memory: a systems distinction

Retrieval and memory are different

Retrieval and memory are often treated as interchangeable concepts, but they solve different systems problems.

What memory adds

Retrieval answers the question of which information can be fetched. Memory also requires deciding what should persist, how information changes over time, and when historical information should influence future behavior.

Why the distinction matters

Understanding this distinction is important when designing agent infrastructure because a retrieval system alone does not necessarily provide persistent memory.
